Frequently Asked Questions

Do you offer custom quilts?

If you have a serious interest in a custom quilt for your home, or for someone you care about, please feel free to contact me at jamquiltsinfo@gmail.com. Include your phone number, time zone, and a good time for me to call you.

How do we get started on my custom quilt?

Visit my website and my quilts to get an idea of the breadth of my work. Some quilts are not for sale. However, if you like a particular quilt on my website, a brand new one can be custom made for you. There are colors and patterns to suit many different tastes and styles. If you have a pattern in mind, or a photograph of something you like, please make that available to me.

What are the next steps for my custom quilt?

Once you decide to move ahead with a custom quilt, we will discuss your space, size of the quilt, available lighting, the use or user of the quilt (is it an accent piece for the living room, a wall hanging, for the master bedroom, baby, child, or guest room?), frequency of use, colors, style, etc. I will send you a written description to approve before work begins. The completed quilt is a custom item made just for you and constitutes a final sale.

Can I supply my own fabrics?

You can supply your own fabrics based on the quantities I instruct you to buy, or I can curate and purchase fabrics for you with your approval. I strongly discourage purchasing fabrics online, sight unseen. Fabrics should be purchased from a reputable quilt shop. Top quality, name brand fabrics are preferred. I do not endorse or work for any fabric companies.

How long will it take to complete the quilt?

Depending on the fabrics, quilt pattern complexity, size, and finishing process, it could take up to 2-3 months, and more if the quilt is very large. Plan well in advance, especially the quilt is for Christmas, a wedding, or other special occasion.

How much will the quilt cost?

The basic cost structure is materials, supplies, labor, packing, shipping and insurance. As well, cost depends on the fabrics, quilt size, and complexity, and other materials needed to complete the quilt that will be custom made for you. You will receive an estimate of cost, and a schedule of payments.

What other materials are needed to complete the quilt?

Other materials include backing fabric, binding fabric, thread (I will select suitable thread for your quilt and fabric), batting, and a set-up fee to cover the cost of the pattern, and preparation of the fabrics before work begins. There may be other supplies needed for your specific quilt.

What should I do when my quilt arrives?

When the quilt arrives at your home, call me immediately to confirm receipt. Open the package, remove the quilt from the plastic bag, bring it to a suitable location, and look it over carefully. Exercise due care and PLEASE do not leave your quilt unattended. Keep it away from kitchen and cooking spaces, children, pets, fireplaces, and wet, damp, or outdoor locations.

How do I care for my quilt?

It is very important to treat you quilt with care. A well cared-for quilt will last a long time, and can become a family heirloom. Your order will include detailed care instructions. NEVER store your quilt in a plastic bag or plastic blanket box. The only time a quilt should be placed in a plastic bag is during shipping.
